콘크리트성운

《콘크리트 성운》은 내가 20대 중반, 원인 모를 병으로 4년간 방 안에서 고립되었던 경험에서 시작되었다. 세상과의 완벽한 단절 속에서 유일한 소통 창구는 고층 아파트 창문을 통해 바라본 도시의 야경이었다. 칠흑 같은 방 안과 대비되는 도시의 불빛들은 밤하늘의 별처럼 반짝였고, 이는 나에게 단순한 시각적 즐거움을 넘어 심리적 안식처가 되었다. 이 경험을 통해 도시가 단순한 물리적 공간이 아님을 깨달았다. 도시는 인간의 내면적 욕구와 감정이 투영된 거울이자, 우주의 별들이 죽고 태어나는 순환과 같은 생명력을 지닌 유기체였다. 우리가 우주의 별들이 폭발하고 그 잔해로부터 창조된 생명체이듯, 도시 역시 그러한 별의 잔재를 바탕으로 인간에 의해 형성된 또 하나의 생명체인 것이다. 《콘크리트 성운》은 도시와 인간의 탄생, 성장, 쇠퇴, 재생이라는 생명 주기를 시각화한다. 각각의 이미지는 독립적으로 존재하지만, 영화적 몽타주 기법을 통해 하나의 순환적 서사를 완성한다. 일식을 담은 〈필연적 우연〉에서 시작하여 신생아의 〈별〉로 이어지고, 도시 속 현대인들의 고독과 역동성을 거쳐, 마지막 꺼져가는 불꽃 〈소멸〉에서 다시 첫 이미지로 순환한다. 이는 죽음이 끝이 아닌 새로운 시작임을 암시한다. 밤하늘의 별이 혼돈 속에서 질서를 찾아내는 우주의 상징이라면, 도시의 불빛은 혼돈 속에서 인간이 만들어낸 질서를 상징한다. 우리는 모두 필연적으로 죽음이라는 종착점을 향해 가는 존재들이지만, 그 어둠 속에서도 작은 빛의 순간들을 마주한다. 별들이 어둠 속에서 반짝이며 우주적 질서를 이루듯, 우리의 삶도 혼돈 속에서 순간적인 의미들을 찾아내고, 그 순간들이 이어져 우리의 존재가 유의미해진다.

《콘크리트 성운》은 도시라는 거울을 통해 우리의 존재를 비추어보는 작업이다. 우리가 보는 것은 우주의 법칙에 따라 생성되고 소멸하는 도시의 모습이자, 그 속에 투영된 우리 자신의 모습이다. 도시의 불빛들은 여전히 아름답고, 그것은 우리가 모두 같은 우주적 운명을 공유하며 살아가고 있다는 조용한 위안이 된다.

Concrete Nebula series began from my experience of being isolated in a room for four years due to an unknown illness in my mid-twenties. In complete disconnection from the world, my only window of communication was the city's night view through my apartment window. The city lights, contrasting against the pitch-black room, sparkled like stars in the night sky, becoming not merely visual pleasure but a psychological sanctuary. Through this experience, I realized that the city is not simply a physical space. The city is a mirror reflecting human inner desires and emotions, an organism possessing the same vitality as the cosmic cycle of stars being born and dying. Just as we are beings created from the remnants of exploding stars, the city too is another form of life shaped by humans from such stellar remains. Concrete Nebula visualizes the life cycle of cities and humans—birth, growth, decline, and regeneration. Each image exists independently, yet through cinematic montage techniques, they complete a single cyclical narrative. Beginning with Inevitable Coincidence capturing an eclipse, flowing into Star of a newborn, passing through the solitude and dynamism of modern urbanites, and ending with the dying flame of Extinction before cycling back to the first image. This suggests that death is not an end but a new beginning. If stars in the night sky symbolize the universe finding order within chaos, then city lights symbolize the order humans have created within chaos. We are all beings inevitably heading toward the terminus of death, yet even in that darkness, we encounter small moments of light. Just as stars shine in darkness forming cosmic order, our lives too find momentary meanings within chaos, and these moments connect to make our existence meaningful.

Concrete Nebula is a work that reflects our existence through the mirror of the city. What we see is the city being created and destroyed according to cosmic laws, and our own selves projected within it. The city lights remain beautiful, and this becomes a quiet consolation that we all share the same cosmic destiny.
